Discover how Bluetooth® has further expanded the horizons of wireless connectivity and integrated environments in their latest market update.

According to the 2023 Bluetooth® Market Update, despite short-term shipment shortfalls caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the market is expected to rebound in the coming years. Annual shipments are projected to reach 7.6 billion devices by 2027, reflecting a robust CAGR of nine percent over the next five years. The report outlined today’s most exciting feature enhancements and emerging use cases of Bluetooth® technology. Here’s what to expect for the Bluetooth market.

Bluetooth® Feature Enhancements

This round of updates focuses on extending existing capabilities to maximize use cases for both novel and legacy Bluetooth® technology, as well as specification projects currently in progress. They also highlight the hard work and collaboration of tech leaders across the industry. For instance, LE Audio builds on 20 years of innovation to improve Bluetooth audio performance, support hearing aids, and enable Auracast™ broadcast audio, a new capability that will revolutionize how we experience audio and connect with our surroundings.

Other feature enhancements include:

  • Periodic Advertising with Responses (PAwR): A new Bluetooth LE logical transport that supports multiple device communication scenarios, including bi-directional communication between a hub and thousands of end nodes. This feature is particularly relevant for the electronic shelf label (ESL) market, which has lacked a global wireless ESL standard until now.
  • High-Accuracy Distance Measurement: Under development, this capability aims to facilitate even greater accuracy in locating systems, for better precision in measuring distances between Bluetooth devices.
  • Higher Data Throughput: An upcoming enhancement that targets a data rate of up to 8 Mbps to cater to the growing demand for increased performance and broader media streaming support.
  • Bluetooth® LE in Higher Frequencies: Currently in progress, this specification is intended to define LE in extended band spectrums, including 6 GHz, to best support evolving needs.

With 3.5 billion Bluetooth® peripheral devices expected to ship in 2023 alone, these endeavors will influence how consumers and developers experience the IoT at home and beyond.

Emerging Use Cases in Bluetooth® Technology

At the forefront of ingenuity, the Bluetooth SIG member community is consistently developing features and capabilities that enable wireless technology to power an increasing number of traditional and emerging use cases.

For example, Auracast™ broadcast audio delivers augmented audio experiences, allowing users to tune into public audio transmissions, muted TVs, and shared streams. High-quality and low-powered, Auracast harnesses a Low Complexity Communications Codec (LC3) for better interoperability, easy multi-stream maneuverability, and minimal latency.

In home and office settings, Bluetooth technology is refining how users interact with their connected environments. Digital keys grant users the ability to access other devices and entities using their smartphones, such as cars, garage doors and entry locks, and office spaces. Networked lighting control systems can also be managed with Bluetooth technology, saving businesses money and energy while enriching work environments.

Ambient IoT, powered by low-cost Bluetooth tags, lets users efficiently manage everyday objects, with a focus on streamlining and simplifying high-velocity supply chains in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Likewise, Bluetooth-enabled electronic shelf labels (ESLs) allow for dynamic, real-time pricing and stocking information, giving retailers more time to cater to shopper experiences.
